SPEAKEASIES WITH GREAT AMBIANCE IN SAN DIEGO

The term speakeasy is believed to have originated from patrons who had to whisper because they were in illegal bars?

During the Prohibition era of 1920-1933, these establishments became popular in the U.S. Liquor was illegal, but creative people always seem to find a way around this. Thus, speakeasies were popping up everywhere. They are hidden in San Diego restaurants, hotels, and basements that require a special password or knock to get in these dimly-lit, secret locations.

About two decades ago, the speakeasy was revived as an alternative to the noisy, boisterous, hyped-up nightclub scene. As well, the classic cocktails of the 1920s era, such as the Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour, and Manhattan, enjoyed a huge retro fascination.

In San Diego, there are more than a few speakeasies to choose from. The ones that intrigue us the most are those that are unique. As a matter of fact, we want your speakeasy experience to be enjoyable, entertaining, and memorable.

Many of these websites direct you to Open Table or don't give much information when clicked on. However, finding a speakeasy is not easy. Thats the point.

This bar has a secret door that opens into an elegant but casual atmosphere with mahogany wood finishes and velvet seating. Bartenders here work with guests to create the perfect cocktail based on their tastes, unlike other speakeasies.

In order to get to Youngblood through Noble Experiment, you must first go to The Neighborhood restaurant on G. Street. Get ready for a fun, fascinating experience!

The Mothership's story takes you into a mysterious world with no intelligent lifeforms but plenty of natural resources where an astronaut crew of the A.A.S.C. Mothership becomes stranded. Upon discovery, all naturally occurring liquids are not only tasty but also intoxicating. A permanent vacation on this planet is the crew's idea instead of trying to return home.

The Little Italy tiki bar is hidden in plain sight within the restaurant Craft & Commerce, accessed through a chiller containing a wall of skulls. It's a little creepy, but it's a lot of fun!

This exotic bar's extensive drink list includes such island-y concoctions as Navy Grog, Painkiller, Singapore Sling, and Doctor Bombay. If you dare, they even have an impressive cocktail menu. In souvenir glasses or tiki mugs, you can enjoy larger drinks that are great for sharing.

This one definitely delivers what we promised! Visitors to this swanky, eclectic environment can experience ancient Chinese medical treatments and Far Eastern wellness therapies.

A futuristic apothecary is located within the Common Theory Public House, which makes it seem as though it is a secret speakeasy. There are also elevated booths, a Jade bar, and lots of flickering candles as guests meander through a series of elaborate hidden entrances leading to the Realm, an apothecary with Far Eastern elements built in 1920s.

Asian small plates are offered here, alongside seasonal cocktails and spirits to cure whatever ails you!

A name alone is intriguing enough to capture your attention.

As with most speakeasies, this one is hidden in plain sight among the shops at UTC in La Jolla. An ornately decorated liquor storefront disguises this small venue. If you have a reservation, you'll need to inform the clerk so they can handle it for you. Despite open hours, walk-ins are not guaranteed entry, especially weekends.

An elegant 19th-century European-styled room with a rotating fireplace opens to a hidden bar in the liquor shop. Romulus and Remus are two brothers raised by a she-wolf before founding the ancient city of Rome, hence the name of the speakeasy.

There are also beer and wine on the menu, along with House Favorites, Rich and Creamy Blends, Reserve Cocktails, and Boozy-Forwards.

A unique theme definitely runs through this speakeasy. It claims to be the first speakeasy that borders a cemetery. Inside Tahona, one of San Diego restaurants, is this hidden bar. In Old Town, the El Campo Santo Cemetery has 477 lights illuminating the graves in homage to the buried. It is only after you've admitted to your sin that you can access this speakeasy. That sin becomes your password.

Room 56's mystery begins before you book a table, because to secure a reservation, you have to find a secret code on their website and play their game. Bar guests are guided up a spiral staircase dimly lit with flickering candles from the Gaslamps Moxy Hotel's hidden library door. At any given time, there can only be 25 guests at the elegant and intimate venue.

Originally known as the speakeasy, it bears the name of our founding fathers, the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Bar food is limited, but what drink do you order? Despite the fact that cocktails are so damn good, you'll have to exercise self-control and keep sipping. There are classics and other delights to enjoy at their bar, shaken or stirred.
